Early Tuesday Afternoon Update On This Weekend's Possible Snowfall

Looking at the latest weather guidance and other data, it is beginning to appear that a light snowfall is looking increasingly more likely during Saturday afternoon into part of Saturday night.

The reason for this has to do with the two parts of the jet stream. To get a major blockbuster type snowstorm here, you need to have the northern and southern parts of the jet stream to phase right over the East Coast of the United States. This causes a powerful storm system to form from this which then produces major amounts of snow.

Instead, what looks to potentially happen is that the northern and southern parts of the jet stream will remain separate. This will lead to a storm system over the southern United States to remain south of our area & another weaker storm system to push its way across the region during Saturday and Saturday night.

Given this, I'm thinking that we could see a period of snow during Saturday afternoon and during the first half of Saturday night that leads to something like a 1 to 3 inch or 2 to 4 inch type snowfall.

That said, the uncertainty with this weekend's storm remains fairly high and because of this, the forecast for the weekend can & probably will still change. Some ways it could change include having both storm systems miss the area leaving us with no snow; having both streams of the jet stream to phase which would lead to a big snowstorm Saturday afternoon through Sunday and finally having a partial phase of the two parts of the jet stream which would lead to a moderate sized snowfall Saturday afternoon through Sunday.

More updates on this weekend's weather will be posted as needed.

One thing that is much more certain with the forecast the next few days will be the cold and very windy conditions.

West to Northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph are expected to continue throughout tonight, all of Wednesday, all of Wednesday night and all of Thursday.

These strong winds will combine with low temperatures tonight and Wednesday night of around 10 Degrees to produce wind chill temperatures of around 10 below zero tonight and Wednesday night.

These strong winds will also combine with high temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday of around 25 Degrees to produce wind chill temperatures of Zero to 10 above zero throughout the daytime hours of Wednesday and Thursday.
