Be Careful Of Icy Conditions The Rest Of This Afternoon Into This Evening Across Western & Central Mass

Even though temperatures are in the upper 30s to near 40 Degrees across much of the area, the ground is so very cold that the rain that's falling is freezing on contact on untreated roads, parking lots, walkways and other surfaces.

I wanted to mention that most roads are likely fine and the short trip I took from Sturbridge to Southbridge less than a hour ago, I found roads to be fine, although there were some icy spots in the parking lots I was in.

Either way, I urge everyone to use a lot of caution throughout the rest of this afternoon as rain is expected to continue throughout the rest of this afternoon & it'll freeze on contact with untreated roads, parking lots, driveways, walkways and other surfaces. Slow down and take extreme care traveling.

As we get into this evening, however, it is expected that rain will change to snow from north to south as colder air works into the region.

Current indications seem to point towards the rain changing to snow first across areas near and north of Route 2 by 7-8 pm this evening. The rain-snow line is then expected to push southward to about I-290 and the Route 9 corridor, including the entire Worcester Metro by about 10 pm. Areas near the Mass Pike may change from rain to snow by about 11 pm. Areas south of the Mass Pike as well as across the lower Pioneer Valley look to remain as all rain.

All precipitation is expected to come to an end just after midnight tonight.

Snow amounts of 1 to 2 inches looks possible this evening across the upper Pioneer Valley, as well as across areas north of Route 9. Near and south of Route 9, a dusting at most of snow looks possible with no snow expected south of the Mass Pike.
