For Tonight: An abnormally strong high pressure system will bring the entire area another night of quite cold temperatures.
Skies tonight will be clear with low temperatures between 10 and 15 Degrees. Winds will be North at 5 to 10 mph.
Sunday: That very strong high pressure system will continue to control our weather throughout the day on Sunday.
This means that sunny skies are expected during Sunday morning with partly sunny skies expected during Sunday afternoon. High temperatures will be between 30 and 35 Degrees. Winds will be South at 5 to 10 mph.
Sunday Night & Monday Morning: The weather for very late Sunday night into Monday morning will need to be watched for the chance of some light snow, light freezing drizzle or light freezing rain.
A piece of atmospheric energy will traverse the area during the late night hours of Sunday morning into Monday morning. The moisture associated with this piece of energy will push into some very dry air associated with that high pressure system. This makes for a difficult forecast as it’s quite possible that the air might still be too dry to support any precipitation at all. Now, if we do see precipitation, it’ll be in the form of light snow, light freezing rain and light freezing drizzle for several hours from the predawn hours of Monday morning until about mid to late Monday morning.
My thinking is that Western Mass has a greater chance of seeing a mixture of light snow and light freezing rain starting about 2-3 am Monday morning and lasting until about 8-9 am. Any icing from the light freezing rain will lead to the possibility of slippery conditions for the Monday morning commute.
As for Central Mass, the dry air over the region might lead to little or no precipitation falling at all. If there is going to be any light snow or light freezing rain, it might occur around sunrise Monday morning and might lead to some impacts during the Monday morning commute.
Monday Afternoon Through Tuesday: A frontal system is expected to move through the area during Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Temperatures by Monday afternoon and Monday night will be mild enough to support all rain.
Because of this, we should see some scattered rain showers during Monday afternoon into Monday evening followed by widespread rain showers from late Monday night into Tuesday morning. The rain showers will come to an end by Tuesday afternoon.
High temperatures Monday afternoon will be between 40 and 45 Degrees. Temperatures on Monday night will be in the 40s. High temperatures Tuesday will be near 55 Degrees.
Wednesday Through Thursday: Another frontal system is expected to push its way through the area during Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Wednesday looks partly sunny, but skies will become cloudy by late in the day. High temperatures will be near 45 Degrees.
A round of widespread rain showers are expected during Wednesday night and Thursday morning. These rain showers are expected to come to an end during Thursday afternoon. Temperatures on Wednesday night will be between 35 and 40 Degrees. High temperatures Thursday will be between 40 and 45 Degrees.
It Might Actually Snow Next Weekend: An Arctic air mass is expected to push into the region by late next week and next weekend. There is the possibility that a storm system might take advantage of this cold air mass and bring us accumulating snow at some point next weekend. Should this occur, it would ensure that we would definitely see a white Christmas across the entire area.
That said, the uncertainty is quite high on both where this storm might track in relation to our area and how strong it might be. Track and strength of any storm system is going to be important as a further offshore track would mean little or no snowfall, while a track that takes a storm right over Southern New England would mean a messy icy mix of precipitation.
For now, I do think that there’s the possibility that we’ll see some snow around next Saturday or so. How big of a snowfall it is remains to be seen, but for now, I’m hedging on a light to possibly a moderate size snowfall. This potential snowfall for next weekend is something that I’ll be keeping a close eye on and be sure I’ll have updates for you as needed in the coming days.
Fingers and toes crossed for an actual legitimate white Christmas.
